Google Ads

"How much should I spend on Google Ads?" is usually the first question a Hornsby trade or local-service business asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on two separate costs that get confused with each other: your ad spend budget (what you pay Google) and your management fee (what you pay an agency, if you use one). Here's how to think about both.
Your ad spend is set by you and paid straight to Google, so it's not a fixed fee. For most Hornsby and North Shore local-service businesses, a workable starting budget sits somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars a month, depending on how competitive the trade is and how many suburbs you're targeting. A single-suburb electrician competing on a handful of specific terms needs far less than a business trying to rank across the whole North Shore for a broad term like "plumber."
Two things move cost per click more than anything else: how many other businesses are bidding on the same keyword, and how relevant your ad and landing page are to that keyword. Emergency and high-value trades (hot water repairs, electrical faults, roof leaks) tend to have higher cost per click than general enquiry terms, simply because more businesses are competing for that exact customer at that exact moment.
If you use an agency, the management fee (what you pay for campaign setup, optimisation, and reporting) is separate from your ad spend budget. Be wary of any pricing model that isn't clear about which is which. A "10% of ad spend" model, for example, can quietly reward the agency for spending more of your money rather than spending it well. OZ Media Digital's packages set management fees separately from your ad budget, so there's never an incentive to inflate your spend.
For eligible trades, Google's Local Services Ads run pay-per-lead rather than pay-per-click, with pricing set by category and location rather than a bidding auction you control directly. This can work out cheaper per genuine enquiry for some trades, but it requires a Google Guarantee background check and isn't available to every industry, so it's worth checking eligibility before assuming it's the cheaper option.
There's no universal number. A $50 cost-per-lead is expensive for a $150 job and cheap for a $15,000 kitchen renovation. The only meaningful benchmark is your own job value and close rate: track how many leads actually convert to booked work, and work backward from there to decide what you can afford to pay per lead.
Google Ads cost for a Hornsby trade business isn't one number. It's a combination of your ad spend budget, an optional management fee, and how competitive your specific trade and suburbs are. The businesses that get the best return aren't necessarily the ones spending the most; they're the ones with tight keyword targeting, a landing page built to convert, and a clear view of what a lead is actually worth to them. This is exactly the setup OZ Media Digital builds for trade clients across Hornsby and the North Shore before a single dollar of ad spend goes live.
